There has been as many as 122 homicides reported in the greater KC, MO. Area as of Oct. 24th, 2019 compared to 113 and 118 reported in 2018 and 2017, respectively. 2018 closed w/138 homicides, while 2017 closed w/151. 2016 and 2015 closed w/131 and 111 reported homicides, respectively.
This upward trend of homicides shows Kansas City, MO. replicating a modern-day civil war zone. The statistics show 60% of the victims to be between the ages of 17-34, and 44% of the perpetrators within that same genre. With 69% of the victims being black males, coupled w/53% of the perpetrators being of this same demographic these implications suggest that we’re experiencing what has been coined a “hip-hop holocaust.”
Because a great majority of black males between the ages of 17 and 34 are fanatics of the hip-hop culture (if not aspiring hip-hop artists themselves) it is without question that there’s a relationship between the culture of hip-hop and the reality we live within our community everyday. This by no means implies that the culture of hip-hop is solely responsible for the feverish pitch of violent crime in KC, MO. But it does imply that the messengers and their message have an influence concerning the local body count.
PDG/PUM’s mission is to tap into the gifts and talents of every local artist, aspiring artist, poet and public speaker and utilize their voice to influence their peers to greater levels of civility and inspire them to higher levels of socio-economic productivity output.
PDG/PUM has a vision of a murder-free KC! A city where local artists can become budding pop stars whose talent and influence is utilized to reverse the current upward trend of annual homicides through performances and initiatives that aim them for international stardom and local contribution through contractual agreements.
PDG/PUM’s goal is to impact the current upward trend of a growing murder rate, reducing its numbers to record lows. 2014 saw its lowest number of reported homicides with a total of 76 murders. Our goal is to perpetually challenge this total driving the annual murder rate from triple digits into the single digits.
The objectives of PDG/PUM is to establish ongoing programs and events that caters to the talents and creativity of its participants. By targeting at-risk youth and high-risk groups with opportunities and engaging them on a level of contractual professionalism that encourages a more empowering message that will inspire them (and their peers) to Put Down the Guns & Pick Up the Mic!
